London: Nova Publications Ltd., January 1963

8vo., soft paper photographic wraps printed in black and red; ads to verso of covers printed in black and pink; pp. [i], 2-128; with occasional tailpiece illustrations throughout; covers with some light creases; spine a little faded; lower cover with some rubbing; pages toned, as ever, else a very good copy.

Volume 42. No 126 of this sci-fi publication. Here, Ballard contributes his short story ‘The Subliminal Man’, and signs his name to the contents page.

An interesting take on the concept of consumerism, The Subliminal Man tells the story of a future society in which subliminal advertising has led to a habit of discarded goods, sometimes thrown away mere months after being purchased.

Published towards the end of the magazine’s ‘Golden Age’, New Worlds was at the time very much a labour of love, being published by the editor himself. The magazine was sold at the end of the year, making this edition one of the last to be produced under owner and editor, John Carnell’s mantle.
