The Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock 1st / 1st 1930
First edition and first issue published by Constable in 1930. This is a very good ++ copy. The stylish art deco boards have some mottling and rubbing to the gold and silver foil particularly to the back board, although that is not uncommon for this book. There is rubbing to the corner tips. However the spine is in fantastic shape, the binding / book is square and firm. Internally the pages are white and crisp with no foxing or handling wear. The book is overall in very good ++ condition and a nice example.
The classic cocktail compendium put together by bartender Harry Craddock. Born in the UK, Craddock moved to the US and worked at several hotels including the Knickerbocker in New York, until sailing to Liverpool in 1920 due to his services no longer being required because of prohibition. He headed up the American Bar from 1920 at the Savoy and begun a long stint shaking cocktails for its patrons. He compiled all that he learnt and experimented with and 'The Savoy Cocktail Book' was published in 1930. All of the classic cocktails are listed and some not so well known including 'The Earthquake'. Craddock notes 'This is a cocktail whose potency is not to be taken lightly' and 'Corpse Reviver' which Craddock remarks 'four of these in swift succession will unrevive the corpse again!' A key title and rare in nice condition.
