The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle 1st / 1st 1905
First UK edition and first issue published by George Newnes Ltd in 1905. This is an exceptional very near fine copy. The boards and gilt are both bright, clean and clear of marks. The boards are a deep navy blue. There is very minor wear to the spine tips. The pages are very clean and clear from foxing marks. The plates are bright and free from marks also. There is one contemporary owner's name on the front free end paper. There are very faint fox marks to the textblock. These are barely noticeable. This is a highly collectible very near fine copy.
This was the first holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Final Problem". Having published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901–1902, which was set before Holmes' "death", Doyle came under intense pressure to revive his famous character. The first story is set in 1894 and has Holmes returning in London and explaining the period from 1891–1894. Also of note is Watson's statement in the last story of the cycle that Holmes has retired, and forbids him to publish any more stories. An exceptional copy.
