The Remains of Henry Kirke White by Robert Southey 1st / 1st 1807

Nottingham: Vernor, Hood & Sharpe; Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme (1807)

First edition in 2 volumes bound in 1. Full leather contemporary binding with five raised bands and label. Small previous owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown. Stamp on the front free end paper of previous owner William Potter, The Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1940’s. Binding and pages are in very good + condition as is frontispiece engraving of Kirke White. Very clean pages with very little if any foxing or marks other than that mentioned. Boards have some rubbing and wear but overall a tidy very good + copy.

This volume contains the posthumous works of the young poet Henry Kirke White who died at 21, compiled by Southey. Obscure in his own time, Southey's collection did much to establish the poet's reputation after his death. A scarce 1st edition.
