The Poets Pilgrimage to Waterloo by Robert Southey 1st 1816
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, orme and Brown (1816)
First edition. In a contemporary full leather binding with gilt titles and a motif design in each corner. In very good + condition. Lacks half title. With James Heywood’s and J O Edward’s bookplate on inside pastedown. There is sporadic and light foxing to a few of the pages along with a contemporary inscription to the front free end paper. All of the engravings are in place as called for. Overall a very good + copy.
Southey's Pilgrimage to Waterloo unfolds in two parts, each divided into several sections. In the first he describes a journey to the scene of the battle, in the second an allegorical vision underscoring the historical and theological significance of the event.
