The Newton Letter Signed by John Banville 1st / 1st 1982
First edition and first print published by Secker & Warburg in 1982. This is a very good copy. The wrapper has a tear to the front left of the panel of 2mm. There is a mark to the back panel. The wrapper is very complete and is not price clipped. The boards are in nice condition and the book is square and tight. The pages have very occasional foxing to a small handful of pages. There is no previous owners names inside. Overall a very good copy.
This novella follows the adventures of an aspiring biographer of Isaac Newton who rents a rural retreat in the south of Ireland to write an in-depth treatment of an obscure and disturbing letter Newton sent in 1693 to John Locke. He becomes involved with two women: Ottilie Garinger and her aunt, Charlotte. The presence of Charlotte's husband, Edward Lawless, creates a romantic triangle-plus-one. It has been observed that Charlotte, Ottilie and Edward are the three main characters of Goethe's 1809 novel Elective Affinities. The Newton Letter is the third of Banville's "scientific tetralogy" (preceded by Doctor Copernicus and Kepler).
