A first edition and first print published in London 1951 by Heinemann. The copy is in a near fine condition, with the scarce wraparound band. There are no chips or tears. The jacket is not price clipped retaining 10s 6d net price as called for. The pages and the jacket are browned and there is some foxing. There are no previous owner marks. Overall a near fine copy.
Enid Bagnold is best known as the author of National Velvet, the beloved novel of a girl and her prize winning horse. In The Loved and Envied, she tackles middle age and the fading class of expat aristocrats: American, Italian, and Scottish living in France in the 1950s.
