Two volumes from a three-volume set; both crown 8vo; in the publisher’s black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine; both with the signature Gollancz yellow dust wrappers; Volume 1: pp. viii, 455; with the complete dust wrapper, the spine a shade toned but with no loss, displaying 15- on the spine, the book has very light foxing marks to the text block; Volume 2: pp. 446; again with the complete dust wrapper with no loss, with small amount of wear to the top of the spine, not price clipped displaying 15- on the spine, with mild foxing to the preliminary pages and text block and a small toned patch to the half title page; overall a sharp almost near fine two volume set. 
 
A scarce pair of books, being in such nice condition and with their illusive dust wrappers, they are particularly so as volume 1 has been signed and dated by Lord Carson. He has signed ‘Carson of Duncairn 1932’ on the front free end paper. 
 
A biography of the “uncrowned king of Ulster”. The biographer Marjoribanks died before volume 2 could be written so Ian Colvin stepped in to continue the work. Edward Carson was a lawyer and politician who led Ulster resistance to attempts to introduce home rule.  He was also a key figure in some of the most notorious legal cases in history including the Oscar wile trials, leading the defence against Wilde’s action for criminal libel against the Marquess of Queensbury.
