Soho Centenary 1844-1944 Multi-signed 1st / 1st 1944
First UK edition and print published by Hutchinson in 1944. This copy is one of 250 that has been multi signed by the contributors. It is in very good condition. The scarce dust wrapper has a tear to the bottom edge of the front panel. It also has loss and a tear to the top of the spine and along the top edge too. It is not price clipped showing the price of £5-5-0 (a princely sum in 1944! for the signed edition). The book has a small patch of sun fade to the top corner of the front board. The pages are all clean without wear or marks. Overall a very good copy.
This is a scarce limited edition copy and 1 of only 250 that have been signed by the contributors to the book. Soho Centenary was published at the time to raise funds for the Soho Hospital for Women and had contributions from writers, artists and musicians. Of the people that have signed it are Noel Streatfield, artist William Nicholson and also WW1 official war artist Eric Kennington.
Kennington painted 'The Heart of England' (the frontispiece in this book) for Richard Hillary's Mother. In the picture Hillary is seen leaving the shores on his last journey, the bandages on his hands and head are signs of his suffering in previous air combat. A scarce production with many signatures from its contributors.
