BARRIE, J.M. – Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder & Stoughton [1911]

8vo; original publisher’s green cloth, decorated in gilt to the upper board and spine; pp [viii] 267; with 11 black and white illustrated plates as well as a frontispiece and decorated title page by illustrator F.D. Bedford; collated as complete; light foxing throughout, rear paper browned, all plates clean and without wear, upper text block soiled, upper board with a few light scratches to gilt work, occasional rubbing marks to spine ends and corners; overall it is an excellent example being very good or better.

First edition and first print of the novel about Peter Pan and his adventures on the island of Neverland, inhabited by mermaids, fairies, Indians and pirates. The story introduced well known characters such as Tinkerbell and Captain Hook. Peter Pan would be a fixture in Barrie’s writing from his introduction in a short story in 1902, a play in 1904, extracts in a book called ‘Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens’ and then this, the first full length novel that is often now published simply as ‘Peter Pan’. This copy is in particularly nice condition and as such rare.
