Lord Randolph Churchill by Winston S Churchill with signed letters 1st 1906
First edition two volume set published by Macmillan & Co. Limited in 1906. The set is in very good or bettter condition. The original red cloth boards are in excellent shape with only minor rubbing to the spine ends and corner tips. The odd corner is gently pushed. Both volumes have faded spines with both being a shade or two lighter. Both volumes have scuff marks to the bottom of the spine. The pages in both are very clean with no previous owner's inscriptions, ink, foxing or bookplates. The binding is also tight and square. It is a collectable set and better than is usually found.
Tucked loosely inside the first volume are two letters from the Marlborough family. The first letter is undated and from George Spencer Churchill, Winston's uncle and the Duke of Malborough. He writes to a doctor from a local village near to Blenheim asking if an arrangement can be put in place for his services. This letter comes with an envelope with the Malborough black wax seal with the same coat of arms that is on the front of the books.
The second letter is dated 28 December 1874 from Randolph Spencer Churchill to the same doctor. He says "Dear Dr Taylor, I enclose a cheque for 25 guineas to you for your kind services, and wish to say that I appreciate highly your skilful management of, and careful attitude to, her ladyship during the confinement. We go to town today. Believe me, yours truly, Randolph S Churchill." The baby was born at Blenheim palace on 30th November 1874. Randolph was writing in his letter to thank the doctor for officiating the birth of Winston Churchill. A completely one off set. [Woods A8a]
