In Darkest Africa (Two Volumes) by Henry M Stanley 1st / 1st 1890

£450.00Price

First editions published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington in 1890. In the original publisher's cloth with an elaborate gilt design and lettering to the spines. This two-volume set is in a bright and fresh, near fine condition. The binding has a trivial amount of wear to the corner tips and spine ends. A previous owner has written his name in pencil to the inside boards and added a small label with presumably a reference number for his library. Preliminary pages are uncut. All maps and illustrations present, the fold out maps have tears at the joins, which is not uncommon for this set.

Stanley's account of his Emin Pasha relief expedition. It would be an ill-fated journey that would tarnish Stanley's name due to the behaviour of Europeans that were part of his team, and due to many lost lives. Stanley would find Pasha but also worked on his secondary purpose that of annexing territory for his paymaster. A rare set to find in this near fine condition.
