History as an Art Signed by Bertrand Russell 1st / 1st 1954

£550.00Price

First and only edition published in 1954 by The Hand and Flower Press. This is a near fine copy. No dust wrapper as issued. The boards and pages are very clean with no marks or foxing. The back board has a patch of fading to the top edge.  Overall near fine.

Bertrand Russell delivers a 23 page essay on History as an Art and this was part of the Hermon Ould Memorial Lectures. Russell was the second person to do this, after Charles Morgan in 1953. J.B. Priestley then followed Russell in 1955 and these lectures continued on an annual basis for a shortwhile. On each occasion The Hand and Flower Press would print a small quantity of the lectures each year with a small limitation, perhaps around 100, numbered and signed by the author. This copy is numbered 97 and signed by Bertrand Russell to the half title page. A rare signed and numbered copy.
