First thus. Issued as part of George Allen’s late-Victorian re-illustrated series of Austen’s novels, this edition of Emma pairs the text with drawings by Christiana Mary Demain Hammond (1860–1900), a leading illustrator of the 1890s associated with The Graphic and Quiver. Her treatment of Austen’s characters reflects the period’s interest in domestic realism and costume accuracy and provides one of the earliest female visual interpretations of Austen’s fiction.
The decorative binding, with its Art Nouveau floral gilt design, is typical of Allen’s illustrated series of the decade. [Gilson E161]
