Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak 1st / 1st 1958

£450.00Price

First UK edition and first print published by Collins in 1958. This is a near fine copy. The very complete wrapper is in nice condition with very little wear or marks to the panels. The spine is a shade sunned and the corner tips are rubbed. It is not price clipped displaying the correct price of 21s net. The book is very presentable with clean and unfaded boards that have straight edges. The pages are clean with no foxing. There is a bit of browning to the first couple of pages and a neat previous owner's name. Overall a near fine copy.

The novel is named after its protagonist, Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, and takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War II. Due to the author's independent-minded stance on the October Revolution, Doctor Zhivago was refused publication in the USSR. At the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the manuscript was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year.
