Death on the Instalment Plan by Louis-Ferdinand Celine first UK edition 1938
CÉLINE, Louis-Ferdinand. Death on the Instalment Plan.
London, Chatto & Windus, 1938.
First UK edition, translated from the French (Mort a credit) by John Marks. Octavo, pp. 587. Original black cloth, spine lettered in white. Original photographic dust jacket by schall repriced 8/6 net, with publisher’s repricing sticker to the spine. Text block generally clean with light, scattered foxing to preliminaries and edges. Cloth sound and square. Dust jacket present but worn, with loss at the head of the spine and along the upper edge, edge tears and wear to folds, and general rubbing and chipping; nonetheless a very good book with a good jacket.
Celine’s second novel draws on childhood and early life with a corrosive humour and relentless bleakness; it remains a key text in the development of twentieth-century narrative voice. The first UK edition with dust jacket is notably uncommon in any condition.
