Bronte Moors & Villages by Elizabeth Southwart signed 1st / 1st 1923
First edition / Limited edition and one of only 75 copies published by John Lane / The Bodley Head in 1923. This is copy number 65. It is in near fine condition. There is a tiny mark to the front board and a few light marks to the bottom of the spine. Otherwise the buckrum boards are remarkably clean. The pages are also free from foxing, browning or any other marks. Overall a near fine copy.
This limited edition was published at the same time as the trade edition, and has been printed on large paper and buckrum with gilt titling. There is also an etching that has been signed in pencil by the illustrator Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944). Mackenzie's illustrations are reminiscent of the work of his Art Nouveau peers, including Aubrey Beardsley, Harry Clarke and Kay Nielsen. His images for Arthur and His Knights, in particular, are stylistically similar to those of Nielsen in East of the Sun and West of the Moon. This was one of the key titles that he provided the illustrations for, the book covers locations and buildings that are associated with The Bronte Sisters. This would be either in their lives or within their novels. A rare title to find in the limited edition format and in nice condition such as this.
