Isabella Bird (1831-1904), later Isabella L. Bishop after her marriage in 1881 to Dr John Bishop, was one of the most remarkable Victorian travellers and writers. Her journeys took her across North America, Japan, Korea, Persia, Tibet and the Middle East, producing a series of influential travel books. In 1892 she became the first woman elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Letters from the explorer are rare.
