First edition and first print containing all first state issue points. Has the misprints ‘this’ for ‘their’ on line 31, p.26; ‘absolution’ for ‘ablution’ p. 110, line 12; ‘9’ omitted from the page number on p. 129, and ‘hate’ for ‘fate’ on p. 356, line 26. This copy is in very good + condition. Mild shelf lean and corners rubbed. Boards generally in very good condition with a few marks. A previous owner’s contemporary signature is on the title page. All pages generally very clean and very little foxing to speak of. Overall a very good + copy.

The author’s second novel after Almeyer’s Folly published in the previous year. Inspired by Conrad’s experiences as mate of a steamer, the Vidar.
