A small envelope panel signed by Charles Babbage dated 1868
BABBAGE, Charles (1791-1871). Autograph address panel, signed. [England, 1868].
Small envelope panel (110 × 70 mm), addressed in Babbage’s hand “Charles Babbage, 1 Dorset Street”, with a red embossed circular postal stamp partially struck over the terminal letters of the surname. Excised from an envelope; no contents present. Some light overall toning and surface marking consistent with postal use; a faint horizontal ink mark. Verso blank. Overall very good.
An autograph by Charles Babbage, most likely a self addressed envelope that Babbage used with correspodence that was used (returned to him). He is best known as the conceptual originator of the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine, and one of the foundational figures in the history of computing.
