A pop up, 19th century card of a horse and carriage Frankfurt 1891
Made in Frankfurt in Germany in around 1891; 28cm in length x12cm in width x14cm in height (top of the carriage); made from card with the carriage and horse affixed to an oblong piece of thick card, all of which folds neatly and then re-opens and pops up to reveal a 3D horse and carriage; The card is die cut and the footmen along with the horses are chromolithographs; there is additional material used to complete the set, including string for the reigns, a cloth embroidered blanket for the coachman and tracing paper for the windows; overall still remarkably in working order, the set pops up as it would have done at the time it was made, however there is some loss, there would have been a second coachman sat next to the remaining one on the blanket, and the footwell he would have sat in is no longer there; otherwise it looks complete, there is a contemporary gift inscription on one side of the card when it is in the folded position.
A scarce survivor, this beautiful children’s card, was gifted from a father to his son in 1891 and purchased in Frankfurt. There is a space for the message on one side, and on the other is a message in German, that translates as “May your life’s journey be carried gently and softly through the days. May it guide you through joyful paths. May it drive you through wide meadows, of flowers in bloom with a clear spirit and with the evergreen of hope.”
The message accompanies a beautifully made diecast card model of a carriage and two horses, complete with its driver and two footmen at the back, presumably guiding the recipient through a peaceful and joyful life. A sweet sentiment. Also, in addition to all this, if you peak inside the carriage, you will see the passenger, a lady holding a bouquet of flowers, on her way to a dance, or function. The die cut model has a bit missing but is amazing to find at all and particularly so in working order.
