A Nile Journey by Emily Hornby first edition 1908
E.H [HORNBY, Emily] – A Nile Journal
Liverpool: J.A. Thompson & Co. [1908]
8vo; in the original publisher’s blue cloth, with an ornate gilt design on the upper boards of reeds on the Nile, along with gilt lettering on the front board and spine; [ii], [7]. 8-180, [iv]; 20 plates including the frontispiece and a fold out plate of Frances Hornby’s drawings, sketches and watercolours of Egypt; with toning and wear to the spine, a small chip to the bottom of the upper board, a bumped corner to the top right of the upper board, a few light marks to the lower board, with a couple of pages of browning, overall a very good copy.
Mary Hornby initially had a privately printed version of this book printed, shortly after her sister’s death. She republished it here in a larger number and this time included her sister Frances’ watercolours. So, this was the first illustrated or first trade edition.
After the mammoth journey across the middle east, the three sisters this time sailed down the Nile. Again, Emily wrote about their experiences and Frances painted or sketched much of what they saw. It was to be Emily’s last adventure, but she most definitely explored a great deal of the area. A scarce book, in the original publisher’s cloth.
