A large broadside detailing the Duke of Wellington's Funeral 1852
WELLINGTON, Duke of (Arthur Wellesley). The Official Programme of the Duke of Wellington’s Funeral.
London, W. Marshall and Sons, for Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars, [1852].
Large broadside, 570 × 450 mm, printed within a heavy black rule and surmounted by the Royal Arms. Single sheet, old folds; toning in places, a couple of short splits at fold intersections and margins, small pinholes and minor edge wear, but complete and well-preserved for an item of this scale and nature. Very good.
Officially issued order of proceedings for the state funeral of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, held at St Paul’s Cathedral on 18 November 1852. The text sets out in detail the formation and route of the procession from St James’s Park through Piccadilly, Pall Mall, Charing Cross and the Strand to the Cathedral, followed by the full ceremonial order within St Paul’s itself.
The programme records, unit by unit and office by office, the military contingents, heralds, pallbearers, foreign batons, banners, and officers of state; the arrangement of the bier, pall, coronet and Field-Marshal’s baton; the role of the Garter Principal King of Arms and the College of Arms; and the position of the Chief Mourner and royal household.
This large-format ceremonial broadside was produced for official and public display leading up to the day. Survivals are accordingly uncommon.
