A commemorative broadside about the S.S. Titanic printed in 1912
A commemorative sourvenir about the S.S. Titanic
Tinten Abbey: Privately printed [1912]
A broadside measuring 28cm by 22cm; The original paper sheet has been affixed / backed by a thin wooden board; it is complete with a tiny tear to the top left hand side, a small patch to the right hand side perhaps on the removal of a price sticker, and the same but smaller to the bottom right hand side, along with another small closed tear just off the top left edge, overall the edges are soiled in places; overall though it is a remarkably well preserved broadside, most likely so due to it being backed to the board, a very good copy.
The top of the broadside states “Souvenir in affectionate Remembrance of the Captain, Mates, Crew & Passengers who lost their lives by the foundering of the World’s largest liner S. S. TITANIC, whilst on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 15th April 1912.”
This is a scarce piece of Titanic memorabilia, with no other copies located. It looks to be a locally printed broadside, to be sold at Tintern Abbey to visitors. It is more likely this was printed in the year the Titanic sunk to be sold to an interested public. A local called Fred Morgan has written a long narrative poem about the Titanic’s sinking: “With her Captain and men who were counted so brave, alas they got shattered and were sunk in the wave.” In addition to this, is a fantastic illustration of the S.S. Titanic in calmer waters, along with some statistics to the right-hand side of the picture such as when it was launched and how many of the passengers and crew were saved. A scarce item.
