DOYLE, Arthur Conan [Captain Philip TREVOR].

A British Commando [in] The Strand Magazine, June 1901.

London: George Newnes, Ltd., 1901

8vo., pale blue publisher’s wraps, overprinted with classic design in navy; advertisements to verso of front cover, and to both sides of lower; pp. xlviii [ads], [iii], 604-724, xlix-lvi, [ads]; staples rusted through to lower portion, with a couple of nicks, brown spots, and the spine just beginning to split; still a very good example, holding firm in the wraps.

No. 126, Vol 21 of The Strand Magazine, containing an article by Captain Trevor about Conan Doyle and a volunteer vigilante group, which comes complete with numerous photos of the members holding their weapons aloft. Conan Doyle explains how he created and organised the ‘Undershaw Rifle Club’ near his home in Surrey. Also included is Chapter 21 of H. G. Wells ‘First Men in the Moon’.

As is often the way with periodicals of this era, the numerous advertisements to front and rear also provide much entertainment, among which are Crystoleum painting, ‘how to obtain a slender waist’, and portable turkish bath cabinets.
