Poems Before Congress by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, 1st / 1st, 1860

London: Chapman and Hall, (1860).
First edition. This is a very good copy. The deep read boards, with a gilt title, are generally sharp at the corners and highly presentable. There are areas of darkening, one of which is an ink stain. There is a previous owner’s inscription present on the front free endpaper. The text blocks are clean; however, the top edge is slightly blackened. Overall, this is a very good copy of a scarce first edition. The poem ‘A Curse for a Nation’, featured in this collection, was mistaken for a denunciation of England, whereas it was aimed at U.S. slavery. A rare title.
