Silence by Shusaku Endo 1st / 1st 1976

Silence by Shusaku Endo 1st / 1st 1976

London: Peter Owen, (1976). First UK edition. This is a very good or better copy. The dust wrapper is nicely illustrated and with only slight signs of wear at the top edge, with some very minimal soiling present. There is slight separation at the top and tail of the spine. The boards are free from notable chips and marks. The text blocks are bright and white throughout. There is an Ex-Libris sticker present on the front pastedown from Westwick House. Overall, this is a very good or better copy of a scarce title. The novel tells the story of a seventeenth-century Portuguese priest in Japan at the height of the fearful persecution of the small Christian community. A modern classic; it has been adapted to the big screen twice, in 1971 and more recently given the Martin Scorsese treatment in 2016
