The Sea and Poison by Shusaku Endo 1st / 1st 1972
London: Peter Owen, (1972). First UK edition. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, illustrated by Keith Cunningham, is plain and attractive. It has been price clipped and suffers from light areas of shelf wear, light soiling on the rear flap, a lightly faded spine and slight discolouration on the rear panel. The boards are free from chips and marks and the text blocks are generally bright and white but suffer from slight foxing throughout. Overall, this is a near fine copy. Set in a Japanese hospital during the last days of World War II, the story centres on the medical staff who offer to assist in a series of vivisections—experimental operations on live U.S. prisoners of war.
